The Majestic Microbiome Association was officially inaugurated by the Department of Microbiology on July 25, 2024, Thursday, at Bharathiar Arangam, Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science, Erode. Later in the afternoon, the Fresher’s Day 2024 was celebrated with great enthusiasm and grandeur by the students of II and III B.Sc. Microbiology. This event marked a warm welcome for the new students, fostering a sense of unity and excitement within the department.
Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Microbiology jointly organized a two-day International Conference on Modern Research in Biological Horizons (ICMRBH’24) on July 9 and 10, 2024.
The conference featured distinguished resource persons, including Mr. Ditlev Hartmann Bornebusch from Life Science Engineering Informatics UCAS, Technical University of Denmark; Dr. E. Murugesh, Senior Faculty/Radiographer from the Department of Radio Diagnosis, Government Medical College, Omandurar Government Estate, Chennai; and Dr.P.Ponmurugan, Associate Professor in the Department of Botany at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. These experts delivered insightful talks on various topics, enriching the knowledge of the attendees. The conference saw active participation from over 350 students from various colleges, who presented their review and research papers, contributing to the success and vibrancy of the event.
The Department of Microbiology organized an awareness programme on Hepatitis and Zoonotic Diseases on September 10, 2024, Tuesday, at Bharathiar Arangam. The first session featured Ms. S. Sudha, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, who delivered an informative talk on Hepatitis. She covered various aspects of the disease, including its symptoms, modes of transmission, laboratory diagnosis, and the current global scenario of Hepatitis. In the second session, Dr.V.Viswapriya, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, addressed the students on the topic of zoonotic diseases. She provided valuable insights into the hidden transmission routes of zoonotic diseases, gave examples of such diseases, and emphasized the impact of zoonoses. Her session aimed to raise awareness among students about the potential risks posed by pets and the importance of preventive measures.
The Department of Microbiology organized a one-day industrial visit to CSIR-CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute), Karaikudi, on September 26, 2024, coinciding with their Open Day celebration. The visit provided students with valuable insights into the diverse research and development activities in the field of electrochemistry. During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore cutting-edge innovations in areas such as CO2 utilization, energy conservation, power-saving devices, biosensors, electroplating, and electrometallurgy techniques. Scientists and researchers at CSIR-CECRI showcased and demonstrated their groundbreaking work, offering a deeper understanding of these complex scientific fields. The direct interaction with experts provided students with the chance to clarify their doubts and gain a firsthand experience of India's innovation engine.
The Department of Microbiology inaugurated the Majestic Microbiome Association on July 26, 2023, at Bharathiar Arangam. Mr. M. Senthilraja, Former Assistant Manager at Blue Polymer, Thuduppathy, Perundhurai, was the resource person for the event. He delivered an insightful speech on the significance of quality assurance and the importance of industrial placements in shaping careers. During the event, an MoU was signed with Futuristic Bioscience, Gobi, marking a significant collaboration aimed at enhancing student learning and industry exposure. This partnership will provide valuable opportunities for the students to engage in real-world applications of their academic knowledge.
A grand Book Fair was held at Chikkaiah Naicker College, Erode, from August 4, 2023, to August 15, 2023. On August 14, 2023, students from the Microbiology Department of Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science visited the fair and purchased books related to history, Tamil literature, autobiographies, competitive exams, and health. As a thoughtful gesture, the students gifted the department with copies of Kaaval Kottam (a Sahitya Academy award-winning novel) and Vel Paari books, contributing to the enrichment of the department's library collection.
The Majestic Microbiome Association celebrated Onam 2023 on August 29, 2023, at the Microbiology Department. The celebration provided a platform for students to experience the cultural richness and secular spirit of the festival. The atmosphere was made vibrant with Athipookolam floral designs, which are symbolic of Onam, and students embraced the occasion by wearing traditional attire. The highlight of the celebration was a grand and elaborate Onam feast, which included 20 different dishes. These traditional delicacies were prepared and served by the students of the department, making the event a memorable and engaging experience for everyone involved.
The Majestic Microbiome Association of the Microbiology Department organized a heartfelt celebration for Teachers' Day on September 5, 2023, at the Microbiology Laboratory on the BCAS campus. This day, observed annually to honor and recognize teachers, marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India. The event was filled with expressions of gratitude and appreciation from the students towards their teachers. The celebration featured fun games with prizes, followed by thoughtful and surprising gifts for the faculty. Emotional speeches from both the faculty and students made the occasion particularly memorable and heartwarming. The event also provided faculty members with valuable insights into new teaching pedagogies, fostering a deeper connection between teaching and learning.
The Majestic Microbiome Association of the Microbiology Department organized Talent Hunt-2023 as part of the co-curricular activities to showcase and nurture the hidden talents of students. The event was held in two phases: on August 31, 2023, at the Microbiology Laboratory, and on September 8, 2023, at Bharathiyar Arangam. Students participated enthusiastically in a variety of activities, including Bio-rangoli, Mehandi, Face Painting, and Paint Without Brush on August 31. On September 8, the competition expanded to include singing, Ad-Zap, Connection, Extempore Speech, and Matter Tamil Talk in English, among other events. The students enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and showed remarkable creativity, making the Talent Hunt an exciting and memorable experience for all involved.
On September 13, 2023, students and faculty members of the Microbiology Department visited the Central Horticultural Experimental Station in Chettalli, Kodagu. During the visit, students gained valuable insights into plant tissue culture techniques and coffee parchment composting technology, expanding their knowledge of applied microbiology in agriculture.
The following day, on September 14, 2023, the group visited the Defense Food Research Laboratory (DFRL)-DRDO in Mysore. This visit provided students with a firsthand understanding of the crucial role of microbiology and preservation techniques in real-time applications, particularly in the context of food for soldiers. The experience also opened students' eyes to career opportunities in research institutes. In addition, the group explored several tourist spots in and around Coorg and Mysore, making the trip both educational and enjoyable.
Bharathidasan College of Arts & Science, in collaboration with the PG & Research Department of Biochemistry and the Department of Microbiology, jointly organized a two-day International Conference on Interdisciplinary Approaches in Life Science Research (ICIALR) from October 9 to October 10, 2023. The conference featured distinguished resource persons, including Mr. Sham Saju, Food Safety and Quality Compliance Executive from Sharjah, UAE; Dr. N.V. Dhanya, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Sri Sankara Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram; and Dr. N. Jayakumar, Professor and Head, Department of Bioinformatics, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. These experts delivered insightful lectures on various topics, enriching the knowledge of the participants. The conference saw an enthusiastic participation of over 300 students, research scholars, and faculty members from various colleges, fostering a collaborative exchange of ideas in the field of life sciences.
The Department of Microbiology organized a heartfelt farewell party on April 15, 2024, at Bharathiar Arangam, primarily for the outgoing batch of final-year students. The event was filled with excitement as the seniors actively participated in a range of fun activities, including games and a gift exchange. The party was hosted and organized by the junior students, making it a memorable occasion for all involved. Faculties also expressed their appreciation by presenting tokens of love to the graduates. The event concluded with a joyous photo session, capturing unforgettable memories. The atmosphere was further enlivened by a vibrant friendship song, creating an uplifting environment filled with high energy and immense pleasure, leaving everyone with cherished memories of the day.
On the occasion of National Science Day, the Department of Microbiology hosted a vibrant celebration and the valediction of the Microbiome Association on February 28, 2024. The event was graced by Dr. N. Jeyakumar, Professor and Head of the Department of Bioinformatics at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, who delivered an inspiring address on the significance of science and the importance of celebrating National Science Day. The celebration featured engaging activities such as a Science Expo, Bio-rangoli, and a Science Day speech competition. Dr.N.Jeyakumar commended the students of the Majestic Microbiome Association for their exceptional contributions during the academic year 2023-2024 and presented them with momentos, prizes, and certificates. The event concluded with a heartfelt appreciation of the Association members for their unwavering support in organizing various successful programs throughout the year.
The Department of Microbiology hosted a vibrant Fresher's Party on August 18, 2022, at Bharathiar Arangam. The event was organized by the second and third-year students to welcome the first-year students with great enthusiasm and a nostalgic spirit. The fresher's party was filled with excitement as the first-year students participated in a variety of activities, including a catwalk, dance performances, singing, and an interactive question-and-answer session. The event was a memorable occasion that fostered a sense of camaraderie and unity among the students.
Our Department organized a two-day educational tour to Munnar, Athirappilly Waterfalls, and Thrissur District, Kerala, from September 1 to September 2, 2022. A total of 67 students, accompanied by 4 staff members, participated in the tour. The trip was both educational and enjoyable, offering students an opportunity to explore natural landscapes while enhancing their learning experience.
The Majestic Microbiome Association of the Microbiology Department celebrated International Microorganisms Day on September 16, 2022. Mr.V Jothiprasad, M.Sc., PGDCA, Founder of Futuristic Bioscience and Micro and Macro Algae Training Centre & Manufacturing Unit, Gobi, was the resource person for the event. He delivered an insightful talk on "Spirulina Production and E-Commerce," providing students with valuable knowledge about spirulina cultivation and the growing field of e-marketing. This program enhanced students' understanding of both the scientific and entrepreneurial aspects of spirulina production.
The Microbiology Department organized a one-day industrial visit to the NTADCL Sewage Treatment Plant at S. Periyapalayam, Tiruppur Corporation, on September 24, 2022. The visit was aimed at providing industrial exposure to the third-year B.Sc. Microbiology students. A total of forty-four students, along with three staff members, participated in the visit, gaining valuable insights into sewage treatment processes and environmental management practices.
The Microbiology Department, in collaboration with the Department of Business Administration, organized a guest lecture on "Cancer Awareness" on September 30, 2022, at Abdul Kalam Arangam. Dr. R. Mahendran, MBBS, MS, MCH (Surgical Oncology) from Erode Cancer Centre, Erode, served as the resource person for the session. The lecture provided valuable insights into cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment options, enhancing awareness among the students and faculty members.
To raise awareness about recent scientific innovations and their practical applications in daily life, the Department of Microbiology at Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science celebrated Science Day Week 2023 from February 20 to February 28. During this week, various engaging events were conducted, including Bio-Rangoli, Poster Making, Face Painting, Bio-Mime, Photography, Ad-Zap, and a Science Expo, all themed around relevant scientific topics. Students also contributed by pasting informative posters in the college cafeteria, highlighting the importance of healthy food and the impact of food wastage. On National Science Day, February 28, a grand Science Exhibition was held at Thiruvalluvar Arangam, where students from other departments visited and explored the exhibits.
As part of extending curricular activities and promoting entrepreneurial development, the Department of Microbiology at Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science organized a state-level workshop on Spirulina Production and Mushroom Cultivation on March 3, 2023. Mr.Jothiprasad, Founder & Head of Futuristic Bioscience & E-Commerce Training Centre, Gobi, Erode, served as the resource person for the Spirulina cultivation session. The Mushroom Cultivation session was led by volunteers from the college’s mushroom cultivation unit. A total of 85 students from various life science departments across different colleges actively participated in the workshop and benefited from the knowledge shared.
The Department of Microbiology organized a one-day industrial visit to the Pasteur Institute of India, Coonoor, Tamil Nadu, on 10/03/2023. In addition to the visit to the institute, students also had the opportunity to explore nearby attractions such as the Rose Garden, Botanical Garden, and Sims Park.
On the occasion of National Vaccination Day, the Department of Microbiology organized a program on 16.03.2022 to raise awareness about vaccines and vaccination. The event included various activities such as drawing, poster presentations, PowerPoint presentations, exhibitions, and debates. Students from the Microbiology Department actively participated in these events, contributing to the success of the program.
The Majestic Microbiome Association of the Microbiology Department celebrated Micro Fest Sports Events on 22.04.2022 at the college playground. Students from the department participated enthusiastically in a variety of sports, showcasing their talents. The events included Kho-Kho, cricket, and various athletic games.
The Majestic Microbiome Association of the Microbiology Department organized a Talent Carnival on 26.04.2022 at the department. The event featured a variety of activities, including Art from Waste, Fruit Carving, Hair Styling, Mehendi, Gelatin Art, Petri Art, Food Identification, and Bridal Makeover. Students from the department actively participated in these events, showcasing their creativity and talents. The best performers were selected by faculty members from various departments.
The Majestic Microbiome Association of the Microbiology Department organized a science exhibition, "Micro Science Expo," on 29.04.2022. The event was also attended by Mr. N.K.K. Naren Rajaa, CEO, and Mr. Arulkumaran, Administrative Officer, who visited the exhibition and appreciated the students' efforts. Over 60 innovative models were displayed by the students of the Microbiology Department.
The Microbiology Department organized a farewell party titled “Not an End, Only a Different Beginning” on May 31, 2022, at Bharathiar Arangam, BCAS campus. The students of I & II Microbiology bid farewell to the outgoing III year students with great joy and nostalgia. The event featured a series of entertaining activities presented by the junior students. The gathering concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, making it a memorable and meaningful occasion for all.
The Microbiology Department held the Majestic Microbiome Association Valedictory for the academic year 2021-2022 on June 10, 2022, in the Microbiology Laboratory. Certificates and Prizes were presented to the participants and winners of various events organized by the association throughout the year. The students also engaged in discussions about the past activities of the association and shared their ideas for future initiatives.
