Department of Microbiology

Overview

The Department of Microbiology was established in 1995 with a vision to foster rural development and promote entrepreneurship skills among students. Initially offering an undergraduate programme, the department has since expanded to include both UG and PG programs. In line with our commitment to sustainable student development, we design a certificate course each year to address emerging needs and provide practical learning experiences.

Our department is backed by a dedicated team of faculty members with solid research expertise, supported by well-equipped laboratory facilities. Since 2018, we have established specialized units for mushroom cultivation and azolla cultivation, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in sustainable agricultural practices. We collaborate with leading industrial partners, including AWE Care Analytical Research Laboratories, Ellis Biotech Private Limited, and Futuristic Bioscience Group, to enhance learning and practical exposure. Regular industrial visits help bridge the gap between theory and practice, offering students real-world insights into the field.

The department also organizes international conferences, guest lectures, and workshops to broaden students’ academic horizons. Additionally, we emphasize community engagement through outreach programs to raise awareness and contribute to social welfare.

Vision
  • To emerge as a centre of excellence in higher education and research in Microbiology.
  • To foster extension services by actively involving students and faculty in meaningful community outreach.
  • To inspire all stakeholders to contribute to the scientific community, embracing the fields of Microbiology, Science, and Technology as responsible and moral Indian citizens.
  • Mission
    • To nurture and inspire young minds to reach their full potential for the betterment of society.
    • To empower students from rural backgrounds to confidently face global challenges with skill, knowledge, and determination.
    Mushroom cultivation unit:

The Department of Microbiology at Bharathidasan College of Arts and Science established a Mushroom Cultivation Unit in 2020, with the expert consultation of Dr. Aravind Selvaraj from Elies Biotech, Erode. In this initiative, students gather paddy straw from local farmers and obtain mushroom seeds from spawn centers in and around Erode. The cultivated mushrooms are then sold to students, faculty, and the management of the college, fostering both practical learning and entrepreneurial skills among the students. This project not only supports sustainable agriculture but also encourages self-sufficiency and community engagement.

Majestic Microbiome Association

Student association brings the intimacy between the students and department. Majestic Microbiome Association is a platform to bring out the curricular and co-curricular activities of the students with joyous mode. By bringing the subject experts in various fields of microbiology together, students are trained to explore the knowledge regarding foresight. The office bearers are elected by department students. Association activities upgrade skills like organizing, coordinating, leadership quality, communication, hierarchy, follow-up, reverence of education, and prognostication in all aspects.

Objectives of the Association:
  • To bring the department psyche
  • Holistic development
  • A space for open and healthy discussion
  • Collaborative activities

Entrepreneurial activities

Micro and Macro Algae Cultivation (Spirulina and Azolla) and E-Commerce:

The Department of Microbiology organized an entrepreneurial certificate course on “Micro and Macro Algae Cultivation (Spirulina and Azolla) and E-Commerce”. The course was conducted by Mr. V. Jothiprasath, M.Sc., PGDCA, Founder and Head of Futuristic Bioscience and E-Commerce Training Center, Gobi. Mr. Jothiprasath successfully led the training sessions, which included both theoretical classes and practical cultivation techniques.

The cultivation of Spirulina and Azolla continues to play a crucial role in fostering entrepreneurial skills among students. Students actively sell Azolla to college students and faculty, using the funds generated to support the development of their ongoing activities. This initiative not only promotes practical learning but also encourages self-sufficiency and entrepreneurial spirit within the student community.
