About NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was introduced in our college in 1998 with the goal of fostering the development of students' personalities and character through voluntary community service. The NSS embodies the principle of "Education through Service," drawing inspiration from the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Its motto, "NOT ME, BUT YOU," reflects the core value of placing the welfare of the community above individual interests. Through participation in NSS, students are encouraged to cultivate selflessness and a sense of social responsibility.

Objectives of NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) seeks to cultivate a wide range of qualities and competencies among its volunteers, empowering them to contribute meaningfully to society. The objectives are as follows:

  • To gain a deep understanding of the community in which they serve and reflect on their own role within it, fostering self-awareness and social consciousness.
  • To identify the needs and challenges facing the community and actively engage in devising and implementing solutions.
  • To instill a strong sense of social and civic responsibility, encouraging volunteers to be proactive and responsible citizens.
  • To apply academic knowledge to address real-world problems, creating innovative and practical solutions for both individual and collective issues.
  • To develop skills in mobilizing and motivating community participation, ensuring inclusive involvement in social initiatives.
  • To nurture leadership abilities and embrace democratic principles, empowering volunteers to lead with empathy and fairness.
  • To build resilience and preparedness, equipping volunteers to respond effectively to emergencies and natural disasters.
  • To promote national integration and social harmony, fostering a spirit of unity, tolerance, and mutual respect among diverse groups.

Through these objectives, NSS aims to mold well-rounded, socially conscious individuals who are equipped to create positive change in society.

NSS attempts to establish meaningful linkages between ‘Campus and Community’, ‘College and Village’ and ‘Knowledge and Action’. Bhararthidasan College of Arts and Science has an NSS unit functioning with an NSS program officer at the College. National Service Scheme has two types of programme.

  1. Regular activities
  2. Special Camping Programme

These programs, led by NSS volunteers, aim to create a positive impact on both the college community and society at large, promoting social responsibility, awareness, and proactive participation in addressing contemporary challenges.

Special Camping Programme

The NSS Unit of our college organizes an innovative and impactful Special Camp every year, lasting seven days, where around 150 NSS volunteers and staff members actively engage in various community-oriented activities. The primary focus of the camp is to create sustainable awareness among villagers about the importance of cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and hygiene, while also fostering a sense of social responsibility.

In line with future-focused initiatives, the camp introduces modern practices such as waste segregation education, promoting eco-friendly alternatives to reduce plastic usage, and setting up solar-powered lights in community spaces to highlight renewable energy. Volunteers also take the lead in greening the village by planting trees and creating community gardens, encouraging sustainable living practices.

Additionally, the camp features an environmental awareness drive, where villagers are taught how to manage waste, conserve water, and adopt eco-conscious lifestyles. Volunteers also clean key areas like the school campus, temple premises, Panchayat building area, and village streets, demonstrating the power of collective action in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

To engage the youth and children, motivational programs are conducted, focusing on future-ready skills, digital literacy, and the importance of education in the 21st century. Interactive workshops on mental health and physical well-being are held, emphasizing holistic development. Sports activities are organized to teach students the importance of health and teamwork, with a special focus on innovative wellness practices such as yoga and mindfulness.

Through these forward-thinking initiatives, the NSS Special Camp not only aims to improve the immediate surroundings but also seeks to equip the community with the knowledge and skills to lead a sustainable, healthy, and progressive lifestyle.
