The Red Cross, symbolized by its iconic emblem on a white background, has been a universal symbol of medical relief since 1864, originally established to signify medical teams on the battlefield. The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), founded in 1920 under the Indian Red Cross Society Act and incorporated by Parliament Act XV, serves as a beacon of humanitarian aid across the country. Among the most vital branches of the IRCS is the Youth Red Cross (YRC), a dynamic movement aimed at empowering young individuals aged 18 to 25. The Indian Red Cross Society adheres to the "Seven Fundamental Principles" that guide its operations:
The YRC engages college students in volunteerism and community service, fostering a spirit of compassion and responsibility. In 1998, our college proudly launched its own YRC unit with a group of passionate volunteers. Today, the unit operates independently as part of the YRC Zone of the University, which is directly linked to the Tamil Nadu branch of the IRCS.
The YRC club at our college plays an active role in addressing social issues, organizing a wide range of initiatives like blood donation camps, blood drives, rallies, and observance of important national days. These initiatives provide volunteers with invaluable opportunities to learn and develop key skills such as leadership, teamwork, and community engagement, all while contributing to causes that matter.
The primary objective of establishing the Youth Red Cross is to cultivate a sense of responsibility and awareness among the youth of our nation. The key goals are as follows:
